How do you update an IPTV app on a Firestick?
If the app came from the Amazon Appstore, update it from your Appstore library. If it was sideloaded through Downloader — as TiviMate always is — install the newer APK straight over the existing app. Installing over the top is treated as an upgrade and keeps your playlists; uninstalling first wipes them completely. Back up inside the app before doing either.
Why nothing happens on its own
Fire OS only auto-updates what it installed. An app you sideloaded through Downloader has no update channel — Amazon does not know it exists, and the developer has no way to push to it. It will sit on the version you installed indefinitely, which is exactly why an app that worked perfectly for a year suddenly stops populating its guide.
The steps
- Check which version you are on. Open the app's own settings and find the version number — in TiviMate it is under Settings, then About. Note it down. Half the people who reinstall an app were already on the current version and had a different problem.
- Back up before you touch anything. In TiviMate, use Settings → Backup to write your playlists, EPG sources and layout to a file. IPTV Smarters has no backup, so write down your portal URL, username and password instead. An update that goes wrong is trivial to recover from with a backup and painful without one.
- Update through the app store if it is listed there. IPTV Smarters Pro and a few other players are in the Amazon Appstore. Open the Appstore, go to your library, and update from there. This path preserves data automatically and is always the right one when it is available.
- Otherwise, install the new APK over the old one. Open Downloader, enter the developer's official download URL, and install the newer APK. Installing over an existing app of the same signature is an upgrade, not a fresh install, so playlists and settings survive. Do not uninstall first — that is what wipes your data.
- Reboot the Firestick. Settings → My Fire TV → Restart. An updated app running on a stale process is a common source of odd behaviour immediately after an update.
- Verify the version and playback. Reopen the app, confirm the version number changed, and play a live channel and a VOD title. If either fails, restore your backup and check the developer's notes — occasionally a release requires a re-added playlist.
The one rule that matters
Install over. Never uninstall first.Android keeps an app's data when a new package with the same signature is installed on top of the old one, and discards it when the app is removed. Every “I updated TiviMate and lost all my playlists” post is somebody who uninstalled first.
Only install from the developer
APK aggregator sites repackage players with additions the developer did not put there. Use the developer's own download URL — TiviMate's from tivimate.com, IPTV Smarters' from its official site — and nothing else. A repackaged player asking for your portal credentials is asking for credentials to a paid account.
When an update is not the fix
Updating is not a general-purpose repair, and reinstalling an already-current app wastes an evening. Match the symptom first:
- Channels will not load at all → channels not loading
- An authorisation error → failed to authorize
- Nothing answers at all → server unavailable
- Stuttering picture → buffering fix
- The guide is blank → EPG not working
