The DStv remote does more than change channels — paired correctly, it controls your TV's volume and power too, so you only need one remote for everyday viewing. This guide covers pairing it to your TV, what each key button does, how to use your phone as a backup remote, and the handful of fixes that solve almost every unresponsive remote. For the wider context on decoders, the guide and account management, see our complete DStv guide.
There are a few generations of DStv remote — older infrared models and newer ones bundled with the Explora and Explora Ultra — so the exact button you hold to enter setup can vary. The principles below apply across them; where models differ, we say so.
Most remote issues are quick wins. By the end of this guide you'll know how to pair, navigate and troubleshoot your remote in a couple of minutes.
Pairing the Remote to Your TV (Volume & Power)
By default the DStv remote controls the decoder. To also control your TV's volume and power, you pair it to your TV brand. The general process is the same across models:
- 1Switch on both the decoder and the TV so you can see what each button is doing.
- 2Put the remote into TV setup mode — typically by holding a setup or DStv button until the indicator light flashes.
- 3Enter your TV brand's code, or run the automatic code search if you don't have the code to hand.
- 4Test the volume up/down and power buttons; if they control the TV, you've found the right code.
- 5Save the setting so the pairing sticks, then use a single remote for both the decoder and the TV.
Because volume lives on the TV rather than the decoder, this pairing is the only way to control sound from the DStv remote. If volume and power suddenly stop working but channels still change, it's the TV pairing that has dropped — just run the steps above again.
The Key Buttons Explained
A few buttons cover the vast majority of everyday use. Here's what each one does:
Guide
Opens the on-screen TV guide (the EPG) showing what's on now and next across your channels, so you can browse and jump straight to a programme.
Info
Shows details about the programme you're watching — title, synopsis and timing — without leaving the channel.
Record
On an Explora, captures the current or an upcoming show to the built-in hard drive; press it from the guide to set a future recording.
Arrows & OK
Navigate menus, the guide, catch-up and on-demand sections, and confirm your selection.
Coloured keys
Context-sensitive shortcuts used inside the guide and menus — the on-screen prompts show what each does at the time.
Back & Home
Step back through menus or jump to the main menu to reach settings, recordings and on-demand.
The guide button is the one worth getting comfortable with — it's the fastest way to find live sport or set a recording. If you're still deciding which decoder's features you want, our DStv Explora guide covers recording and on-demand in detail.
The In-App Remote: Your Backup Controller
Lost the physical remote or run out of batteries at the worst moment? The DStv app includes a remote function that can act as a backup controller for your decoder. Once your phone and decoder are set up for it, you can navigate the guide, change channels and control playback straight from your phone.
It's a genuinely useful fallback to keep installed even when your remote is working — handy when the batteries die mid-match. The same app is also where you manage your subscription and send re-activation signals, covered in our DStv login and account guide.
Fixes When the Remote Is Unresponsive
An unresponsive DStv remote almost always comes down to one of a few causes. Work through them in order — the first usually does it:
Flat or weak batteries
By far the most common cause. Swap in fresh batteries before anything else — weak ones cause intermittent, laggy response too.
Obstructed line of sight
Infrared needs a clear path to the front of the decoder. Move anything blocking it and point the remote directly at the box.
Lost decoder pairing
Re-pair the remote to the decoder following the on-screen prompts; this restores full control if channel changes stopped working.
TV volume/power not responding
The TV pairing has dropped — re-run the TV pairing steps above to restore volume and power control.
Frozen decoder, not the remote
If nothing responds at all, the decoder itself may be stuck. Power-cycle it at the wall, wait 30 seconds, and switch back on.
If the picture itself is the problem rather than the remote, our DStv error codes fixcovers signal and activation messages. And if you're tired of pairing remotes to decoders altogether, internet TV runs on devices whose own remotes — or apps — just work out of the box.
A Simpler Setup Without the Decoder
Pairing remotes, replacing batteries and re-syncing to the decoder are all quirks of satellite hardware. With internet TV, you watch through a device you already own — a Firestick, Android TV box or Smart TV — using that device's own remote or a phone app, with no decoder to pair to. Vivimate is a subscription internet TV service built around exactly that simplicity.
Use the remote you already have

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I pair my DStv remote to my TV?
Put the remote into TV setup mode, enter your TV brand's code or run the code search, then test volume and power and save the setting. The exact key depends on your remote model.
Why won't my DStv remote work?
Usually flat batteries, a blocked line of sight to the decoder, or lost pairing. Replace the batteries, clear the path, and re-pair the remote.
What does the guide button do?
It opens the on-screen TV guide (EPG) so you can see what's on now and next and jump straight to a programme.
Can I use my phone instead of the remote?
Yes. The DStv app has a remote function that works as a backup controller for your decoder when the physical remote is lost or dead.
Why can't I change the volume?
Volume is controlled by the TV, so the DStv remote must be paired to your TV first. Re-run the TV pairing if volume stops working.
